Sue Pitts Obituary

Sumter, SC … Letty Sue Andrews Pitts, 86, daughter of the late Mary Yandell Andrews Christensen and John Benjamin Andrews, passed away on September 4, 2022, in Sumter, SC. Sue attended public school in Mecklenburg County, NC, and Queens College. She married Ronald “Casey” Pitts on November 3, 1956.

Sue and her husband Casey moved to Sumter in 1979 and attended Sumter First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and The Colonial Dames. Sue enjoyed flowers and everything about weddings, she was a bridal consultant at RuVelle’s in Sumter for many years and continued to help brides after RuVelle’s closed. She loved the theater and the time spent working at Patriot Hall in Sumter where she was privileged to meet Tony Bennett, Roger Williams and other entertainers who performed there during her tenure. Sue was also an avid bridge player who enjoyed playing and teaching others to play.

Sue joined the DAR on February 6, 1981. She served on the state speakers staff and is a lifetime honorary regent of the ID Sumter’s Home Chapter of the DAR. She is a past national vice chairman for the community service committee. She loved and supported the Tamassee DAR school. Sue was instrumental when her chapter created the historically accurate dollhouse for the children at Tamassee. She took a special interest in the sewing room and made some of the articles that went into that room. She attended every workshop that was held during the creation of Sunshine Hall, which is the name of the house that still resides in the SC cottage at Tamassee. It is on display so all visitors can see it. The doll house project won a national DAR award. Sue was also the beloved bus general for so many years when the chapter went to Continental Congress in Washington, DC. Everyone in the state knew and loved the bus general and she loved doing it. Every year she said she wouldn’t do it again and the day they got home she started planning next year’s trip.

Sue was predeceased by her husband Casey of 65 years in December 2021. Survivors include 3 children, John (Beverly) Pitts of Bowling Green, KY; David (Wendy) Pitts of Harrisburg, NC; and Lynn Pitts of Charlotte, NC; 2 grandchildren, Sara Pitts of Pippa Passes, KY; and Adam (Bailey) Pitts of Bowling Green, KY; and 1 great-granddaughter, Harper Elliotte Pitts of Bowling Green, KY.
