Sumter, SC…. Terry Fletcher Newman, age 76, beloved wife of 48 years to Stephen Ernest Newman, went home to Jesus on Monday, August 25, 2025, at McLeod Health Clarendon.
Terry was born in Greenwood, SC, a daughter of the late Joseph Fletcher and the late Elizabeth Burdette Fletcher.
She attended Lander College and earned her BS from Clemson University and M.Ed. from the University of South Carolina. Her early professional years were spent in medical technology, until she discovered her true vocation as a teacher. She dedicated her life to education, inspiring generations of students throughout her distinguished career. Honored as Sumter District Two Teacher of the Year, she spent many impactful years at Crestwood High School, where her wisdom and guidance left a lasting mark.
Terry and Steve had a passion for spreading the good news and sharing the love of Jesus everywhere they went. Terry was an active member at her church, teaching Sunday School, VBS, AWANA, participating in Bible study groups and mission trips. In her retirement, she was also heavily involved with Westside Christian Academy as a teacher and Academy Team member.
Beyond the classroom, she was a loving wife and a cherished friend. Her warmth, sweetness, and unwavering kindness will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
In addition to her devoted husband, she leaves to cherish her memory a number of beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws, along with many young people whom she took into her heart as her own.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Stephen James Newman, and her sister, Paula Fletcher Davis.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon, Saturday, August 30, at Westside Baptist Church, 554 Pinewood Road, Sumter, SC.
