Sumter, SC ....... Toyoko Duhon (née Sugaya), age 76, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025, in Sumter, South Carolina. Born on November 16, 1948, in Yokosuka, Japan, Toyoko brought light and love into the lives of all who knew her.
Toyoko was the beloved wife of Gerald Duhon and a devoted mother to her daughters Patti Duhon (Jeff), Michelle Stanton (Chris), and Jeannie Duhon. She was a cherished grandmother to Cody (Whitney), Marcus (Megan), Rachel (Daniel), Austin, Gage (Bethany), and Kenji. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Tristan, Danielle, Leland, Wyatt, Arthur, Benny, Yuji, Marisol, and Dutton. She is also survived by two brothers.
She was preceded in death by her father Shichigoro Sugaya and mother Asa Sugaya; two brothers; a sister; and her grandson Raidon (Michelle).
A talented seamstress with an eye for detail and creativity, Toyoko expressed her artistry through fabric and thread. She was also a proud member of a karaoke club where she shared joy through music and camaraderie. But perhaps her most treasured role was being “Nana” — not only to her grandchildren but to many children whose lives she touched with warmth and affection.
Toyoko had an extraordinary gift for making everyone feel special and loved. Her home was a haven of comfort where family and friends were always welcome. She found joy in feeding others — her miso soup and fried rice became legendary among those lucky enough to sit at her table. The warmth of her food reflected the warmth of her heart.
Her friendships spanned decades and distances; she cultivated bonds that endured time and change. Toyoko taught those around her the value of hard work and the immeasurable strength found in a mother’s love. She was a steadfast supporter — our biggest cheerleader when we soared, our toughest critic when we stumbled, and our unwavering pillar of strength through it all.
She was everything to those who loved her. May Toyoko’s memory bring comfort to all who were blessed to know her.
