Sumter, SC…..William Francis Scanlan, age 89, beloved husband of the late Barbara P. Rice Scanlan, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Sumter Terrace.
William was born in Boston, Massachusetts, a son of the late Maurice V. Scanlan and the late Dorothy L. Gambell. William proudly served in the United States Army as a military policeman in West Germany. After his service, he worked as a machinist in Massachusetts before later settling in Sumter. He became a devoted member of St. Anne St. Jude Roman Catholic Church and participated actively in both the VFW and the American Legion. William loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed reading. He will be remembered as a good and loyal man and was a loving father and grandfather.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his son, Mark R. Scanlan, and his wife, Superiana, of Sumter; his daughters, Marlaine D. J. Scanlan of Florida and Patty A. McGinnis of North Carolina; his brother, James Scanlan and his wife, Katherine, of Maine; and his grandchildren, Aaron Scanlan, Adam Scanlan, and Megan McGregor.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Paul Scanlan, and his sister, Dorothy Perry.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 9:30 am at Barrancas National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Rd. Pensacola, Florida, 32508.
