William Harvey Weishuhn

Sumter, SC……………….

William H. Weishuhn was full of thunder and always dreamed of skies to

conquer. He was a steadfast founder of a large and loving family. After 91

years, Bill passed away in Sumter, SC.

Billy was born in Bay City, Mi., to Harvey and Florence Weishuhn, one of

four children. He started his life long mechanical prowess by taking apart

watches and small things. He progressed into being the family fixer of

everything including toys, vacuums, air conditioners and especially cars.

He was the youngest child, curious and active. His oldest sister, Lois

Sayles still lives in Michigan.

Bill married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Ellen Secor Weishuhn, and

joined the US Air Force after many small, colorful jobs. Bill loved flying and

guarded the nations’ borders all over the world including two tours in

Vietnam. He was in the first flight to Vietnam and one of the last. Major

Weishuhn twice earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, one with Valor for

heroism. After retirement, he was active in the Sumter American Legion

and the Order of Daedalians (fraternity of military pilots). From high school

and beyond, he built and maintained strong friendships with Dot always by

his side. Dorothy continues to live in Sumter.

Bill and Dorothy settled in Sumter with their four children in 1970. His

Sumter branch of the Weishuhns has expanded to fifteen grandchildren

and eighteen great-grandchildren who live across the USA. As a father and

grandfather, he has advised, aided and loved his family. He was always just

a phone call away. He inspired his oldest son and four other family

members to serve the US Military. Five of his family, so far, have joined him

as pilots flying high. His children, Stephen (Kathy), Kathy (Mark), Karen

and William (Margaret Linn) have survived him.

William Harvey Weishuhn will be remembered. Bill, off you “go into wild

blue yonder, climbing high into the sun.”
