Sumter, SC………………… William “Bill” Robert Dougherty, age 79, beloved husband of 57 years to Margaret Nesbitt Dougherty, died on Wednesday, September 17th, 2025 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital.
Mr. Dougherty was born in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late Vincent John Dougherty and Monica Blake Dougherty. Bill retired from the US Air Force as a MSgt, with 20 yrs of honorable service and served an additional 20 years in the US Air Force Civil Service. He enjoyed running (completing numerous marathons and half-marathons), scuba diving, hiking, the Carolina Panthers, mowing his lawn, and being the family swim instructor. He loved hosting family and friends, where everyone was welcome poolside at the ‘Dougherty B&B’. His greatest joy was being PopPop, teaching and spending time with his grandkids. He’ll be remembered for his wisdom, generosity, devotion, and love, which will live on in every life he touched.
Surviving in addition to his wife are: One daughter, Rachael Dougherty; Three grandchildren, Christine Cyr, Kevin Baker, Kyle Baker; Three great grandchildren, Sophia Christensen, Levi Christensen, Riley Baker; and siblings Jack Dougherty and Tracy Baker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Sean Dougherty; a sister, Barbara Walsh; and a brother, Brian Dougherty.
A funeral mass with full military honors will be held on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025 at 11:00am at St. Anne St. Jude Catholic Church.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 22nd, 2025, from 6-8pm at Bullock Funeral Home.
