Jacqueline DeLorme Obituary

Jacqueline Elizabeth Farwell DeLorme, 96, widow of Alfred C. DeLorme, Jr., passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020 at Harmony at Five Forks Retirement Center in Simpsonville, SC.

 

Born February 1, 1924 in Jacksonville, FL, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth J. and Fred H. Farwell. She and her sister, the late Harriet Haas Mott, grew up in West Palm Beach and Jacksonville, FL. Jacqueline graduated from Ward Belmont College (Belmont University) in Nashville, TN. After marrying in 1949, she and her husband and five children lived in FL, GA, and VA before settling in Sumter, SC in 1963. Only recently did she relocate to Simpsonville, SC with her daughter, Suzanne McCarthy.

During her life, Jacqueline was interested and active in many areas. Early on, she was a member of the Junior Women’s Club, heavily involved with Mother’s March of Dimes Clinic in Ware County, GA, and winner of the Fifth District Georgia Homemaker of the Year in 1958.She taught at Shaw AFB for Sumter Technical College and was MBA Coordinator of Golden Gate University at Shaw AFB until her retirement in 1984. After retirement, Jacqueline enjoyed her time as a volunteer for Sumter United Ministries and following the death of her husband of 52 years, she moved to Covenant Place. Once there, she became active in the Resident Council and an avid leader of their Employee Christmas Fund.

 

As a lifelong Episcopalian, Jacqueline was an active member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church participating in vestry and choir. She also served as the Florence District Director for ECW and was active in Daughters of the King as well as Cursillo. Most recently, she was a member of Church of the Holy Comforter. She was also a member of the Stateburg Literary and Musical Society and hosted many meetings at her home in Stateburg.

She was a loved mother who had a knack for making a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, and a quick jaunt in the VW bus into an adventure!

She was preceded in death by her oldest child, Alfred C. "Sandy" DeLorme, III and his wife, Karen; and two sons-in-law, Richard "Chip" Hurley, and Michael P. McCarthy.

She is survived by her daughters, Jenny D. Fidler and her husband, Ward Kirlin, Jacqueline D. Hurley, Suzanne D. McCarthy, and Dorothy DeLorme. She was a proud grandmother of 12, Michael DeLorme, James DeLorme, Robin Fidler, Ellison Fidler, Mac Fidler, Zach Hurley and his wife, Misty, Tegan Hurley, Erin Hurley and her fiancé, Rob, Casey McCarthy and his wife, Megan, Molly McCarthy Wallach and her husband, Patrick, Elliot Flautt and his fiancée, Miranda, and Oliver Flautt. She had three great-grandchildren, Nataisha, Makaela, and Siena, and two great-great grandchildren, Emma and Nicholas.

 

A memorial service will be held at Church of the Holy Comforter, Sumter, SC, on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with a private inurnment of her cremated remains in Sumter Cemetery.
