Dalzell, SC…Joe Edward Moore, Jr., age 64, achieved eternal peace on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Prisma Health Tuomey.
He was born in Sumter on September 21, 1955 and grew up in the Sumter area,
graduating from Sumter High School in 1973. He went on to The Citadel, Clemson University and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, camper, boater and motorcycle enthusiast. He was a Master Mason and a member of Claremont Masonic Lodge 64 in Sumter and was a 17th Degree Knights Templer. He medically retired from Sumter Police Department in 1997 after 20 years of serving the public in the Patrol Division with 10 years as a Sergeant. He also served his fellow citizens, country, and state as a Port Securityman 3rd Class petty officer in the United States Coast Guard for 6 years, serving as a Lieutenant and Executive Officer in the Sumter unit of the South Carolina State Guard for 3 years, and as Marine Safety Officer for 2 years in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 7-1 on Lake Marion.
Joe was always concerned with problems he saw that he felt needed to be corrected, especially in the areas of Constitutional rights violations against his fellow citizens and the misuse of tax dollars, and was an avid write of Letters to Editor in The Sumter Item Newspaper. He was always willing to help others down on their luck, usually resulting in financial burden to himself and will be missed by all of his family and the many friends he made throughout his life.
Survivors include two sons, Joe Edward Moore III and James Ray Moore, two daughters, Lisa Marie Moore and Camilyn Marie Corley, three granddaughters, Autumn Haley Moore, Cecilia Giavanna Ricci and Evelyn Isley Ricci; one grandson, Dallas Edward Moore, a brother John Wiley Moore, and a sister, Nell Nettles. He is also survived by his fiancée, Bonnie Kirk, who was his constant companion and caretaker during the final years of his life.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Edward Moore, Sr., and his mother Nellie Hayes Moore.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 3, 2020 at 1:00 pm in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with Masonic Rites. Interment will follow in the Turkey Creek Cemetery in Lee County.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 2, 2020 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sumter Police Department and Master Masons of A.F.M. Claremont Lodge #64.
