Across your area, an individual impersonating a funeral home employee is contacting families and demanding payment over the phone. Please know that we will never call you and ask for payment over the phone. Do not give the caller your information or money! Hang up and call the police. And if you're ever unsure about anything to do with your loved one, please call the funeral home and speak with your funeral director.

He fought a good fight; he finished his course. Leland Brooks, 67, born November 13, 1953, made his earthly transition July 9, 2021, at his home, 1721 N. St. Paul Church Road, Sumter, SC. Leland was the 6th child and 2nd son of 13 children born to the late Thomas Brooks, Jr. and the late Hester Louise Lane Brooks.
A strong, compassionate, and determined person, Leland waged a great battle against a terminal diagnosis he was given more than 30 years ago. The doctors gave him months, but God gave him years. Many illnesses attacked his body, but he remained mentally alert and physically mobile. Leland was financially astute, had business savvy, and carefully managed his medical affairs. Despite going blind during the latter years of his illness, he always talked about what he read in the newspaper or online. He was well-known for keeping up with and sharing what was going on in the community. He had great wisdom and an equally great sense of humor.
Leland was a 1973 graduate of Hillcrest High School, Dalzell, SC. He served in the United States Air Force for 3.5 Years (1973-1976) where he did a stint in the Philippines. Prior to his illness, he worked construction.
Leland was a devoted father, grandfather, and he was passionate about his family. He was not one for fanfare, but he did much to help many. Leland will be loved and remembered as a valiant victor, not victim, who triumphed many circumstances of life without bitterness. Those memories will be embraced by his son Delvin (Jacinta M.) Alston, his grandchildren: Tyrique J. Alston and Jordyn D. Alston of Sumter, and Jaden D. Alston of Great Lakes, Illinois—US Navy; his 11 siblings: Emily Davis, Pauline Miller, Marie Brooks, Eugene B. Brooks, Vernon L. Brooks, and Karen (Timothy) Smith of Sumter; Benjamin (Theresa) Brooks, Sr., Woodstock, MD; Deborah J. (Sam) Williams, Southfield, MI, Mary E. (John) Brooks-Brown, Charlotte, NC; Patricia Brooks, Yorktown, VA, and Konnie Stamps, Concord, NC. Also, left to cherish his memories are 1 uncle James (Elouise) Brooks, Sumter, SC; 2 Aunts: Maggie Lane, Sumter, SC and Virginia (Marion) Champion, Charlotte, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Leland was predeceased by his parents: Thomas Brooks, Jr. (10/10/20), Hester L. Brooks (01/06/.13); Sister, Thomasina Brooks Greene (03/22/21) and nephew, Steven Brooks Williams (04/23/21).
The family expresses sincere gratitude to Leland’s medical team, the VA Hospital, National Federation of the Blind of Sumter, Swan Lake Dialysis Center, and his most recent extraordinary home-healthcare provider, Melissa Margo Bethea.
Due to Covid, there will be no visitations. A Zoom Memorial Tribute will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2021, at 5:30 P.M.
