Mary Eleanor Cameron

Mary Eleanor Cameron passed away on Sunday March 16th in Camden, South Carolina, at the age of 94.

Born on September 12, 1930, in Goderich, Ontario, Canada, Mary was the daughter of the late Mabel and George Laithwaite of Goderich, Ontario, Canada.

Mary spent her childhood years exploring the waters of Lake Huron and the harbor town of Goderich and enjoying time at the family orchard, Maple Leaf Farms, with her sisters, Fran Hook of Egmondville, Ontario, Canada, and the late Irene Hiles, Violet MacKenzie, and Jean Arblaster.

She graduated from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in London, Ontario, Canada, in 1951. On September 18, 1952, she married Ellis Kelly Cameron in Goderich, Ontario, Canada. While pursuing her nursing career, she and Kelly started a family raising four children and relocating several times as Kelly’s career progressed. In 1977, they settled in Sumter, South Carolina, after moving from Fayetteville, Arkansas. Mary embarked on a second career that proved to be her most fulfilling, working as a medical paralegal for the law firm of Nelson Mullins in Columbia, South Carolina.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Susan Linseman, and her husband Terry of Sarnia, Ontario, Canada; her son, James Cameron, and his wife Barbara of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada; her son, Philip Cameron, and his wife Caroline of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and her daughter, Chris Sarafin, and her husband Steve of Camden, South Carolina, along with cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the care teams at The Legacy of Camden and Agape Care of South Carolina. Their extraordinary care and compassion and kindness for Mary will forever be cherished by her family.

A memorial service will be held at The Church of the Holy Cross on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 1:30 PM. Interment will take place at a later date at Nairn Cemetery, Ontario, Canada.
